THAT'S THE WAY THE FLATCAKE CRUMBLES.: I hate the "this would've never happened in the 90s!!!" rage in the video gaming community.→

Newsflash: games in the 90s were actually pretty shit. I realize your nostalgia boner might not let you see that through the haze of female degradation and paper-thin plots, but you really ought to open up your eyes and see what you’re waxing poetic over.

The writing was pathetic…

Uh… I don’t agree with this? Sure, paper thin plots happened especially with games like Super Mario World, but it was still a great way to kill hours of time. Then in the late 90s we had games like Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon, and plenty of others. One of my favorite games ever, Mega Man X, came out in the early 90s.

Excellent writing is nice, but some games manage to be a lot of fun with a minimalist storyline. Through music or just sheer fun factor there were games that got me going even on an emotional level, given I was younger at the time, but still.

Final Fantasy 7 and 8 are still considered fantastic games with great storylines, aren’t they? Was “female degradation” really so prominent that there were no redeeming qualities in the old 90s games?

I don’t really know anything about the crowd you’re attacking but your post just rubs me the wrong way.

And to put in my two cents, it all really depends on the player whether or not they feel something will make them feel ‘emotionally engaged’ in a game, or what makes it really something worth while. A statement such as this can have plenty of meanings or examples behind it. Whether its something that kills time or actually emerges you in a story. Every game has it’s shit moments, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have it’s golden qualities either.

Regardless how I could look at old games now that I played when I was a kid, there is still something in them (minimalistic or otherwise) that leaves them a spot in my heart, and plenty of room to laugh at some things that seem quite silly or not right.
